Our Values

As a Scout Group our principles are the principles of Scouting Ireland which are enshrined in the Scout Promise and the Scout Law our members follow. They include:

  • Adherence to spiritual principles, loyalty to the faith that expresses them and acceptance of the duties resulting there from.

  • Loyalty to one’s community in harmony with the promotion of peace, understanding and cooperation

  • Responsibility for the development of one’s self.

  • Participation in the development of society with recognition and respect for the dignity of one’s fellow beings and for the integrity of the natural world.

  • Use of a method of progressive self-education, known as the Scout Method, comprising programmes adapted to the various age groups.

As an organisation our Scout Group commits to be Inclusive, Sustainable, Community based, Transparent, Enabling, Safe for its members, Young Person centric, Fun, Active, Progressive and aware of where we come from.

A Brief History of the Group

The Group was founded in 1977 in the St Patrick’s Parish on Forester Street. After successfully providing scouting in that area, in 2006 the Group was required to leave its home in the old church on Forester Street due to Health and Safety reasons . For two year the Group was broken up in multiple locations, when it underwent a huge loss of youth members and adult volunteers.

14th Galway then moved to the Shantalla Community Centre in western suburbs of Galway city to rebuild and service the young population of the area. Due to space restrictions in Shantalla Community Centre we now operate our older sections from the Community Centre and our younger sections from Knocknacarra National School with our camping equipment stored in two containers at the back of the Community Centre. Now with a youth membership from the area the Group is in a position to develop further to server the wider youth population of the area and work towards a point that Scouting is put on a stable sustainable community basis in these communities with a membership representative of the diverse population in the areas.
