Working with Youth

Scouting is a uniformed, voluntary, non-formal education, movement that provides a young person centric environment in a safe way that encourages the Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional, Spiritual development of young people so that they may achieve their full potential and, as responsible citizens improve society. We provide a mixed programme of active progressive Scouting based on weekly club meetings and, most importantly, regular outdoor day events and overnight camps building to major yearly summer camps. Our events provide a mix of adventure sport type activities and community and environmental service projects.

Scouting Ireland

The 14th Galway Scout Group is a local community member of Scouting Ireland, Ireland's national scout organisation, and a part of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. The Scout Group, as a member of Scouting Ireland, achieves its and Scouting Ireland’s scouting aim through a system of progressive self-education, known as the Scout Method. The benefits of following the Scout Method is that is:

  • Guides behaviour in and out of scouting

  • Encourages best effort

  • Promotes personal commitment

  • Gives practical application through activities

The 8 principal elements of the Scout Method are:

Key Activities

Some of our key youth activities of the last year have been:

  • Scout Summer Camp a ten day camp in Linth Clough Scout Centre Manchester Uk

  • Venture Scout Summer Camp a fourteen day camp at Roverway in Netherlands. Roverway is the European meeting of over 16 year old scouts held every three years

  • Organising and Leading a major hillwalking Series in Connemara

  • Participation in the World Scout Event Jamboree on the Internet

  • Beaver Scout Camp in Petersburg

  • Beaver Scout Trip to the Zoo

  • Beaver Scout Community Project with St Mary’s Nursing home

  • Scout Environmental Project with Clean Coast Galway cleaning Rusheen Bay

  • Cub Scout Weekend Camps including participating in County wide Camp

  • Cub Scout Kayaking

  • Cub Scout Community and Beach Cleanups

Over the last year we have some examples of youth personal development, the core objective of our programme of Youth work. Most of these youths joined directly into our Scouts age range and did not come through our children's programme of Beavers Scouts and Cubs Scouts. Through an active Youth work programme of weekly meetings, regular day events, weekend camps and summer long stay camps they have become a group of positive Scouts we are all proud of. This shows our methodology of Youth programme work allows us to expand our offering directly to more teenagers and youths and the value of scouting to these age groups.
